The Effects of Mindfulness Meditation on Binge Eating, Body Dissatisfaction, Depression and Anger in Patients with Eating Disorders : A Preliminary Study

The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of Mindfulness Meditation on binge eating, body dissatisfaction, depression and anger of the eating disorder patients who receive treatment as usual(Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and medication) at eating disorders clinic of a general hospital in Seoul. Participants were 12 outpatients who met criteria for eating disorders. Participants were divided into treatment as usual group(n = 6, control group) and TAU plus Mindfulness Meditation group(n = 6, experimenta group). Mindfulness Meditation group completed 8 weeks treatment sessions, a session was more than 70¢¦90 minutes each. Measures included Eating Disorder Inventory-2, Body Shape Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-Korean. Wilcoxon test was performed to verify pre homogeneity of the two groups. Nonparametric analysis were performed differences of the parameters set in the study using SPSS 19.0. The results of this study showed scores of body dissatisfaction, depression, state anger, trait anger, anger expression-out in Mindfulness Meditation group to be significantly decreased than those in the control group. These results suggest that Mindfulness Meditation can help patients with eating disorders who show binge eating symptom. Finally, the implication and limitations of this study were discussed.
